Tubing the Navua: Five Hours on the River, Six in the Minibus

The Navua rises in the Namosi Highlands, in the green interior of Viti Levu that almost nobody staying on Denarau ever sees. Getting there involves a longboat up through rapids, a village, a waterfall you can swim under, lunch by the water, and then a slow float back down on an inner tube.

It is 4.9 stars across 159 reviews at 105,35 €, which puts it among the highest-rated days on this site. The reviews are unanimous about the river. They are much less unanimous about how the day is described.

“1 day” is doing a lot of work

The booking page gives the duration as 1 day. The itinerary underneath it gives the guided portion at Navua as 5 hours. The gap between those two numbers is the drive, and where you are staying decides how big it is.

River Tubing Fiji collects from eight places: Nadi, Denarau Island, Natadola Beach, Sigatoka, the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, Shangri-La Yanuca Island, Pacific Harbour and Suva. The river is at Navua, on the south coast between Pacific Harbour and Suva.

Look at that list as a map rather than a menu. Pacific Harbour and Suva are close. Sigatoka and Natadola are a moderate run along the Queens Road. Nadi and Denarau are the far end of the island. Reviewers who travelled from Nadi describe the drive as roughly three hours each way, and one added the part the booking page will not: traffic on the return makes it longer, and there is generally one comfort stop in each direction.

That same reviewer’s practical advice is the best thing on the page — if you are coming from Nadi, write the whole day off. Do not book anything for that evening.

The operator’s own review summary concedes the point in softer language: some travellers say clearer details on the tubing time and the day’s schedule would help.

What five hours on the river actually contains

In the operator’s order:

• Longboat upriver into the Namosi Highlands, past rapids, waterfalls and gorges. One reviewer timed it at about 45 minutes and singled out watching the captains work the boat up through the rapids as the part they did not expect to enjoy most.
• A remote Fijian village, with a walk through jungle and plantation.
• A waterfall swim.
• Lunch by the riverside.
• Tubing back down, floating through gentle rapids.

Included in the price: hotel pickup and drop-off, the boat ride, the tubes and life jackets, and lunch. That is the whole list, and it is short because there is nothing else out there to sell you.

The tubing is the name of the trip but not the bulk of it. If you are picturing a whitewater afternoon, this is a float — gentle rapids, scattered along the river, on an inner tube with a guide. The praise in the reviews goes overwhelmingly to the guides, who several travellers mention sang in harmony while the group drifted.

The river is cold, and that catches people out

Fiji is a tropical country with a cold river in it. The Navua comes out of the highlands, and more than one reviewer mentions the water temperature as the day’s one genuine surprise.

The operator’s packing list is: comfortable shoes, a towel, sunscreen, a hat and a change of clothes. Their “know before you go” adds proper water shoes and a bottle of water, and repeats the towel and the change of clothes — repetition that usually means people keep turning up without them.

To that, add what the reviews say rather than the operator: something warm for the drive home. You will be wet, the minibus is air-conditioned, and if you are going back to Nadi you are in it for three hours. A reviewer travelling in 2026 recommended a warm jacket and a quick change of clothes in that exact order, and separately, a neck pillow.

Who the operator says should not come

Two groups, published plainly:

That is the operator’s statement and the only accessibility information published for this trip. If you need to know more than those two lines — how you get in and out of a longboat, what the path to the waterfall is like, whether there is anywhere to sit at the village — ask them in writing before booking rather than on the riverbank. We repeat what the operator publishes and nothing beyond it, because the cost of guessing here falls on the person who cannot get into the boat.

No minimum age is published. One reviewer travelled with a ten-year-old and described it as a day for the whole family; that is one family’s experience, not a rule, and the long transfer is the harder part for a small child rather than the river. If you are weighing it up, the age rules and child prices across Fiji’s operators vary far more than you would expect.

One review the operator answered in public

Among 159 reviews there is a five-star rating whose text reads: the driver was speeding and constantly on his mobile phone.

River Tubing Fiji replied in June 2026, on the record, saying guest safety is their highest priority, that the behaviour does not reflect their standards, and that they would address it with the driver directly.

One complaint in 159 is not a pattern, and a company that answers it in public rather than deleting it is behaving better than most. It belongs here because the drive is the longest part of this particular day, and because the honest version of a recommendation includes the thing that would have been left out.

Does your hotel make this a good idea?

This is the rare Fiji day where the answer depends entirely on your base.

Staying at Pacific Harbour, Suva or the eastern Coral Coast: book it. The river is close, the transfer is short, and it is one of the highest-rated days on this site.

Staying on Denarau or in Nadi: it is still worth doing, but it is a full day and it should be your only plan for that day. Six hours in a vehicle for five hours on a river is a real trade, and you should make it knowingly.

Staying anywhere and planning to drive yourself: the Queens Road runs the length of the south coast and Fiji drives on the left. The road is straightforward, but the day is not shorter for driving it — and after five hours on and in a cold river, the person who drives home is the one who does not get to enjoy the ride. A hire car makes much more sense for moving your base along the coast than for reaching this river. If that is the shape of your trip, it is worth comparing car hire for Fiji; if you are on Denarau for a week, it is not.

The two neighbours on the same river

Jewel of Fiji is the same price — 105,35 € — with a boat, a raft, a waterfall and a village, at 4.9 stars over 13 reviews. Same river, same shape of day, a twelfth of the review history.

Whitewater rafting on the Upper Navua is the genuinely different one: 186,12 € and a gorge rather than a float. It carries 5 stars from 2 reviews, which is to say the rating tells you almost nothing yet. Judge it on the description, not the score.
