Snorkelling With Reef Sharks at Kuata: Nine Hours, Five of Them on the Island, and a Fuel Surcharge

There is a line in one of the reviews for this trip that says more than the booking page does: “Swimming with the sharks was the icing on the cake. Next time we will scuba dive with the tiger sharks.”

Next time, and not on this trip. Not one of the 155 activities in the Fiji inventory on this site is sold as a dive — the shark trips, the reef trips, all of them are snorkels. Fiji’s reputation for shark diving is real, and those dives are not sold through the channel these pages draw from. The one place a tank appears anywhere in this inventory is as a paid extra bought on the island during the Captain Cook island and reef day, and that is not the same as booking a dive.

So the honest thing goes in the first paragraph rather than the last: if you came for a regulator, book that elsewhere.

What is here is a full-day snorkel with reef sharks, and it is very good.

What the day is

You leave Port Denarau on a high-speed catamaran, run north through the Mamanucas and into the southern Yasawa Islands to Barefoot Kuata Resort on Kuata Island. Five of the nine hours are spent there. The rest is the crossing, in both directions.

Ten people is the number to notice. Most of what leaves Port Denarau carries a hundred or more; this carries ten, and it is the reason a guided shark snorkel is possible at all.

The sharks, described honestly by the operator

Two species: white tip reef sharks and black tip reef sharks, both common in the warm waters of the South Pacific. The operator states they grow to about 1.8 metres, and adds a detail that is both useful and slightly funny — underwater they appear around 25 % larger than they are, because of the optics of a snorkel mask.

The number of sharks varies. Sightings are not guaranteed, because they are wild animals, and the operator publishes a success rate of over 95 % rather than a promise.

And then they back it: if no sharks are seen, a complimentary return trip is offered within three days. That is a rare thing to find on a wildlife booking page. Most operators in this business publish “sightings cannot be guaranteed” and stop there. Do note the window — three days — which means the guarantee is worth something only if you still have three days left on the island.

The 75-minute rule, and why it ruins mornings

This is the most important practical sentence on the page, and it is buried at the end of a long paragraph about fuel prices:

the departure time shown is the vessel’s departure from Port Denarau, not your coach pick-up time … Pick-ups begin approximately 75 minutes before departure.

South Sea Cruises collects from 35 locations, and the coach must be pre-booked at least 24 hours in advance. If you miss the transfer, the operator’s position is plain: guests arrange and pay for their own transport to Port Denarau.

So the time on your booking confirmation is not the time you leave your hotel. Add roughly an hour and a quarter, then add the nine-hour trip. This is a full day in the truest sense, and it is the same rule across the operator’s whole fleet — the reason it catches people is that the number sits nowhere near the departure time on the page.

The surcharge added on 1 September 2026

The operator’s own wording: diesel costs in Fiji have risen by over 30 % on the back of global oil prices, and effective 1 September 2026 until further notice a fuel surcharge of $15 per adult and $10 per child aged 5 to 15 applies to this day trip.

It is charged on top of the 166,48 € ticket, not inside it. And it is not unique to this trip — the same operator has surcharges of the same shape on its other island days, with slightly different amounts and dates depending on which page you read.

Check the figure on the page on the day you book rather than trusting this one. “Until further notice” is the operator telling you it can move.

What is included, and the one line that is not

Included: scheduled coach transfers from selected hotels and resorts, the return catamaran crossing, all snorkelling equipment and buoyancy aids, the guided shark snorkel itself, five hours on the island with a buffet lunch, access to the dive shop area, use of paddle boards and kayaks, and drinks at the resort.

The last entry in that same block is an exclusion: infant meals are not included and are payable directly to the resort before you leave the island. It is printed in the inclusions list, in the same typeface as the inclusions, and it is the opposite of one. This is worth a second look on any GetYourGuide page — the two lists render identically and sometimes run together.

Two other money rules: there is no child rate — children pay adult rates, which on a 166,48 € ticket is a significant number for a family, and alcohol may not be brought aboard the vehicle. The child-pricing question varies enormously between Fiji’s operators and is worth reading across all of them before you book anything.

Who the operator says should not come

Published under “not suitable for”:

• Wheelchair users
• Non-swimmers
• Visually impaired people

That is the operator’s statement and all the published information there is. The non-swimmer line is the one to take literally rather than optimistically: this is open water with a buoyancy aid, not a shallow reef you can stand on, and the shark snorkel is the point of the trip.

If you need detail beyond those three lines, get it from the operator in writing before you book. That is the rule on this site without exception, and it matters more here than on a beach day.

Is it worth 166,48 €?

Three entries in the snorkelling category cost more, but not one of them carries a single review yet and one is a three-night trip; among the days with a review history behind them, this is the top of the range — snorkelling in Fiji starts at 43,16 € across 10 activities, with a median of 123,61 €.

What the extra buys is specific: a group of ten instead of a hundred, a guide in the water with you, a resort five hours away in the Yasawas rather than a sandbank in the Mamanucas, and sharks.

If the sharks are not the point, cheaper days do the reef better per euro. The Monuriki, Mana Sand Bar and Monu Cove cruise is 119,36 € with 600 reviews behind it, and island day trips generally run from 58,57 € across 23 activities.
